The Boston Red Sox selected Maryland baseball right-hander Mike Shawaryn with the 148th overall pick in the fifth round of the MLB Draft on Friday.

The junior has served as the Terps’ ace the past three seasons and holds Maryland’s all-time record for strikeouts, wins and innings pitched.

Shawaryn emerged as a top MLB prospect his sophomore year. The 6-foot-3, 211-pound hurler held a 1.71 ERA and 13-2 record in 2015 while setting a program single-season record with 138 strikeouts and helping Maryland reach its second straight Super Regionals.

Multiple publications projected Shawaryn would be a first-round selection entering this season, but his draft stock dropped as his ERA ballooned to 3.18 in 2016. Some scouts also feared his arm slot dropped.

After a program-high eight Terps were drafted last season, Shawaryn is the first Terp off the board this year.
