University of Maryland Police sent out a notice Sunday morning alerting the community of an internet extortion scam.

A male university student reported to police that he was coerced into giving money to an individual who was threatening to post nude pictures of him on Facebook if he did not comply, the notice stated.

The purported images “may have been captured during an online video chat session between the scammer and the victim,” according to the notice.

The notice reminded students to not divulge personal information or images to “individuals unknown to you,” and to contact police immediately in the case of an extortion attempt.

The police department and Criminal Investigations Unit are conducting an investigation, and any additional information can be found here on the police department’s site as it becomes available.
