The Maryland women’s lacrosse team touts the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the fifth straight week as midfielder Kali Hartshorn earned the honor on Tuesday.

Hartshorn’s opened with a two-goal performance in the No. 1 Terps’ 16-11 victory over Virginia on Wednesday. One of the scores gave the Terps a 12-10 lead and proved to be the game-deciding point.

The Allentown, New Jersey, native then broke out in her home state on Saturday, scoring five first-half goals — and six total — while adding one assist in the Terps’ 20-8 demolition of Rutgers.

One of Hartshorn’s goals against the Scarlet Knights was a behind-the-back effort. She collected a pass, sprinted across the face of goal and flipped the ball over her left shoulder, tricking Rutgers goalkeeper Devon Kearns and bouncing it in for the Terps’ 14th goal of the opening frame.

She had previously attempted the move against Syracuse in March but it flew just wide. After the Rutgers game, coach Cathy Reese said Hartshorn is a “creative player” encourages her to take risks.

The Terps have now won at least one Big Ten honor in each of the eight weeks since their season began. Attacker Brindi Griffin and Hartshorn have alternated claiming the rookie award since Hartshorn first won on March 14.

They face No. 7 Princeton at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on Wednesday.
