Maryland football offensive lineman Richard Merritt will reportedly transfer to a junior college, according to 247Sports.

Merritt was a four-star Class of 2016 prospect included in coach DJ Durkin’s first-ever recruiting class. But he barely saw action in his two years in College Park, redshirting his first campaign and serving as a backup this past season.

Given the Terps’ depth on their offensive line, which includes redshirt senior Derwin Gray after he decided to return to Maryland rather than enter the 2018 NFL Draft this past week, it’s unsurprising that Merritt has parted ways with the program.

Last year, Maryland’s offensive line was perhaps its most healthy unit, not losing a starter to injury until it played Michigan late in the season. If the group holds up again next year, there will be little room for backups such as Merritt to break through.
