Three-star athlete Lavonte Gater committed to Maryland football on Wednesday, as the Terps secured their first 2019 commit.

Gater, who attends Ballou High School in Washington, D.C., is ranked the No. 6 player in D.C. and No. 87 athlete in the country, according to the 247Sports. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound local product chose Maryland over Rutgers and Temple, among others.

During his junior season, Gater scored 17 touchdowns on offense while notching six interceptions. The Terps offered Gater a scholarship on Feb. 3.

Maryland’s 2019 recruiting class ranks 52nd in 247Sports rankings, which places it 12th in the Big Ten. Coach DJ Durkin’s squad secured top-30 recruiting classes over the past two seasons.
