Fans react to a play during a Terps basketball game on Jan. 25, 2015.

Didn’t get a ticket to Tuesday’s Terrapins men’s basketball game against Georgetown? You’re not alone.

There were more student ticket requests for the No. 3 Terps’ game against the Hoyas than there have been for any game since Maryland beat Duke in 2013, according to assistant athletics director for ticket services Matt Monroe.

The matchup drew 6,577 student ticket requests, Monroe said. The student section holds 4,000 fans, according to the Maryland athletics’ website, so that’s more than 2,500 fans who didn’t get a ticket to see the Terps play the Hoyas for the first time in a scheduled regular-season game since 1993.

“Typically a Duke game would result in about seven or eight thousand, so it was on par with that and the most we’ve had in several years,” Monroe said.

The ticket office is using a new lottery system for the first three games of this season that gives upperclassmen more chances to get tickets, but it will return to the old system starting with the fourth game of the year. Students earn a loyalty point for each game they attend, but students who are worried that not getting a Georgetown ticket will affect their chances to earn enough loyalty points for later in the season should put those concerns to rest.

Essentially, missing one game won’t kill you.

“If those students continue to go to games, they will rack up the points and will be in a much better position to get a crack [at receiving tickets] once those games do go into the lottery,” Monroe said.

Not all Maryland games are going to be like this. Friday’s season-opener against Mount St. Mary’s and the Terps’ Nov. 20 game against Rider didn’t sell out during the request period, so every student who requested a ticket got one.

If the Terps are as good as advertised this season, you’ll need to go to most of the games and rack up the loyalty points if you want to secure your spot for late-season games against Michigan State and Wisconsin.
