Every week, staff writer Phillip Suitts will take a look at the careers of a number of former Terrapins athletes embarking on professional careers in a variety of leagues. Every Tuesday, it’s former baseball players.

Brett Cecil, LHP, Toronto Blue Jays

2013 stats: 3-0, 1.54 ERA, 21 hits, 47 strikeouts, 12 walks in 41 IP

Skinny: Cecil’s Blue Jays record of facing 43 hitters without allowing a hit ended June 25 in a 5-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. That wasn’t the only streak snapped last Tuesday, either. After throwing 19.2 scoreless innings, Cecil allowed his first run since May 12. On June 27, he gave up one hit in an inning of work, and a day later he only pitched a third of an inning, giving up another hit in the process.

Justin Maxwell, OF, Houston Astros

2013 stats (MLB only): .235 average, .306 on-base percentage, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 13 runs, 2 stolen bases, 27 strikeouts, 9 walks

Skinny: Just seven days after returning to the Astros after being sidelined with a fractured hand for almost two months, Maxwell was again placed on the disabled list, this time for a mild concussion. On June 25, in the fourth inning of a Houston Astros-St. Louis Cardinals game Maxwell attempted to make a diving catch and banging his head on the outfield grass. He was diagnosed with a “mild” concussion later that night. Maxwell pinch ran on June 28 but hasn’t played since. Two days later, Maxwell was placed on the disabled list.

Last season, Kolarek had 19 saves, though only one with Binghamton. The other 18 saves came with the St. Lucie Mets in the Single-A Florida State League.

Rodriguez also went 1-for-3 with two walks in the game. Rodriguez  started the Timber Rattlers’ games on June 25, 26, 27, 30 and July 1. In the other two games this past week, he appeared as a pinch runner. In his last 10 games, the former Terp captain is hitting .208 with a .367 OBP.

Jimmy Reed, LHP, State College Spikes

2013 stats: 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 2 G, 1 GS, 1 save, 6 hits, 4 strikeouts, 1 walk in 5 IP

Skinny: Reed, the Terps’ ace this past season, picked up the first save of his professional career June 26. Reed pitched the last three innings of a 6-1 victory, allowing two hits and striking out two. The save was Reed’s second professional appearance and came exactly a week after he made his first start.

Charlie Haslup, RHP, Staten Island Yankees

2013 stats: 0-0, 2.45 ERA, 4 hits, 5 strikeouts, 3 walks in 3.2 IP

Skinny: Haslup pitched a scoreless ninth inning June 30 in a 6-2 win at Aberdeen. He allowed no hits and struck out one, but he did walk a batter. Haslup also was scheduled to pitch the seventh inning on June 27, but the game was called early, resulting in a 10-8 loss for Staten Island, the Yankees’ Single-A short-season affiliate.

Jack Cleary, C, Arizona League Brewers

2013 stats: .154 average, .214 on-base percentage, 0 HR, 2 RBI, 1 run, 0 stolen bases, 2 strikeouts, 1 walk

Skinny: Three games into his professional career, Cleary, who was drafted by Milwaukee in early June, is 2-for-15 with one extra base hit. As of June 30, Cleary was batting .286 against right-handers. Lefties have caused him difficulty, though. in six at-bats, as of June 30 he had yet to record a hit against them.

Michael Boyden, RHP, Gulf Coast Nationals

2013 stats: 0-0, 6.00 ERA, 4 hits, 4 strikeouts, 2 walks in 3 IP
