Defensive lineman Justin Anderson is leaving the Terrapins football team at the end of the semester, a team spokesman confirmed today.

Jakob Engelke of InsideMDSports.com first reported Anderson’s departure.

Anderson, a Blythewood, S.C., native, recorded six tackles in six games last season after missing all of 2011 due to a preseason injury. He was a notable absence on the Terps’ summer depth chart and was expected to contend for a starting defensive end spot following the graduations of Joe Vellano and A.J. Francis.

In 2010, Anderson started all 13 games for the Military Bowl champion Terps and had 22 tackles. He had 5.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. In his freshman season in 2009 he played in six games and had three tackles.

The Terps have 10 defensive linemen listed on their depth chart with a combined five years of varsity experience led by defensive end Keith Bowers.

Anderson will graduate next month, making him eligible to compete at another school.
