Athletic director Kevin Anderson

The athletic department announced Tim McMurray as its new senior associate athletic director of development Friday. He will also serve as executive director of the Terrapin Club and the senior director of development and alumni relations.

McMurray has 23 years of administrative experience in college athletics, most recently at Southern Methodist University. In his positions at this university, he will be the athletic department’s head fundraiser, unit manager and chief strategist, collaborating with university relations and other campus entities on various fundraising initiatives.

“Tim brings a tremendous amount of experience and leadership to our university and athletics department,” athletic director Kevin Anderson said in a release. “He is an accomplished fundraiser in intercollegiate athletics with an outstanding record of success.”

McMurray most recently served a successful stint as the associate athletics director in development and external affairs at SMU from 2010 to 2013, overseeing three straight record years for the Mustangs in various fundraising categories. SMU athletics received more than $23 million in fundraising — a 268 percent increase for the school over five years — in the 2013 fiscal year.

McMurray started as a sports information director at Lamar University in 1993. In 1996, the Cardinals promoted him to assistant athletic director of external affairs, and he served as the supervisor for the women’s basketball and men’s and women’s golf teams. Later on, McMurray assumed positions in athletic development, starting with Texas State University in 2000.

In 2006, he became the senior associate athletic director at Northern Illinois University, where he was responsible for development and supervising marketing, promotions and ticket sales units. While McMurray was with the Huskies, he was president of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors, which organizes collegiate athletic development on a national level, from 2009 to 2010. He was also on the NAADD Executive Committee for six years.

“Vice President of University Relations Peter Weiler and I are confident Tim will bring vision and guidance to our department that will help us continue to support our athletes and further our vision of the Maryland way,” Anderson said in the release. “We are excited to welcome Tim and his family to the University of Maryland.”
