Back on Dec. 29, Maryland men’s basketball beat UMBC, 66-45. At the time, it seemed largely insignificant — the Terps just won a game they were expected to win against another school from the state of Maryland.

However, it’s not insignificant anymore. UMBC has just has made history, becoming the first No. 16 seed to ever beat a No. 1 seed in the men’s basketball NCAA tournament, with a 74-54 victory over Virginia on Friday night.

This means that the Terps now have a transitive property win over the No. 1 overall seed, and the school that finished the season No. 1 in the AP poll as well.

Of course, it’s especially sweet to see another school from Maryland make the whole state proud by pulling off such a historic upset. Also, it is absolutely delightful to know that the first No. 1 seed to ever suffer this indiginity is one of the Terps’ old ACC rivals and border foe.

For a while, it looked like Maryland’s best win this season was Butler. Turns out it was UMBC. Who would’ve thought?
